FRICTION is a digital single by B'z, released in international territories on April 3, 2007 via the iTunes store. The band's first digital single, it was also their first original English song since 2005's THE CIRCLE closer "Brighter Day". The song was written as the theme for the PlayStation 2 racing video game Burnout Dominator and was included in its March 2007 debut worldwide. While included as a means of promoting the game primarily in Japan, it would later also be included the next year in the sequel game Burnout Paradise that was likewise released globally. In 2018, a revised version of the game titled Burnout Paradise Remastered again included the song when released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Notably, the single's digital release came simultaneously with the self-titled international EP which was exclusively made available outside of Japan on most North American and European iTunes storefronts.

Shortly after its original release, the band decided to revise the song for their end-of-year studio album ACTION. The new version, titled "FRICTION -LAP 2-", featured a new arrangement, new guitar work, and all-new vocals after Koshi decided he could do better with a second pass.

The digital single was delisted from international iTunes stores in 2011 and is no longer available outside of Japan.

Track listing

All music and guitar by Tak Matsumoto. All lyrics and lead vocals by Koshi Inaba.

  1. FRICTION
File:s44 03.ogg A song with entirely English lyrics, "FRICTION" was written for the Electronic Arts video game Burnout Dominator. The song was recorded in Tokyo out of necessity with the band's mainstay Canadian drummer Shane Gaalaas being credited with advising the English lyrics. While this original version was first found here, an updated rendition with re-recorded vocals and an altered arrangement can be found on ACTION under the title of "FRICTION -LAP 2-".
